Visitor Information

The Herbarium is located in western South Dakota at the northern end of the Black Hills.  The BHSU Herbarium (BHSC) is usually open from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm excluding weekends and university holidays. Air Travel

Spearfish is located about 50 miles north of Rapid City, SD.  The closest airport with regularly scheduled commercial flights is Rapid City, and is served by Northwest, United, Delta and Frontier airlines or their subsidiary carriers.  Spearfish is home to the Black Hills Airport which is used primarily for single engine aircraft.

Driving

Spearfish is at the junction of US highway 85 and Interstate 90 (I-90).  Most visitors to our herbarium exit I-90 at exit 12.  This exit is Jackson Boulevard in Spearfish.  If one travels west on Jackson Boulevard for 1.2 miles it intersects with University Street.  Black Hills State University is approximately two blocks north of this intersection.

Parking

Visitor parking is available on University Street near the Student Union as indicated by the yellow signs.  Herbarium staff can arrange temporary parking permits for Herbarium visitors if provided with two working days notice.   

On Campus

The Herbarium is located in room 159 (main floor) of Jonas Hall, the southwestern-most building on campus adjacent to the large parking lot covering the southern portion of campus.
